ON THE HUNT
The search for legal talent is tough. In the recently
released Robert Half Legal 2018 Salary Guide, which
analyzed the views of 200 lawyers from large U.S. law
firms and companies, two-thirds of respondents said
it’s a challenge to find skilled legal professionals today.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed only
15 new enforcement actions against public companies
and their subsidiaries in the first half of 2018, according
to a new report from the New York University’s Pollack
Center for Law & Business and Cornerstone Research.
That sum compares with 45 in the same period a year
ago and is the lowest semiannual total in five years.
“Sexual harassment in the workplace is not new. What’s interesting is that employers are worried because it’s becoming so high-profile, especially with the media reports. They don’t want to be the next headline.”
TOP OF MIND
Litigation continues to be a big worry for general counsel.
Some 69 percent of in-house respondents to Morrison &
Foerster’s Legal Risks to Consumer Products Companies
in 2018 survey said litigation is their top concern this
year. That worry could be justified, especially in the class
action realm: The 2018 Carlton Fields Class Action Survey
found the number of companies facing class actions rose
to 59 percent, up from 53.8 percent last year.
